Central Bedfordshire’s ‘Please recycle after use’ bin tags can’t be recycled

Tags attached to bins across Central Bedfordshire updating residents on one-off garden waste collections can’t be recycled – despite having a ‘Please recycle after use’ message.

This is the second time this year that bin tags have had a misleading message. In March, bin tags were used to publicise the resumption of the garden waste collection service for the year. They were printed with the message ‘Recycling is easy’, but not for the tags as they couldn’t be recycled.

At the time, Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) said:

“We have a choice between using non-recyclable and hard-wearing tags, or cardboard tags that fall off or disintegrate when it rains, so we purchase the hard-wearing ones for durability.”

The latest ‘Please recycle after use’ bin tags appeared to be similar to the previous ones. The council was asked why these new ones could be recycled. A CBC spokesperson said:

“We requested that our contractor (FCC) source recyclable tags from their supplier with the wording ‘please recycle after use’. Unfortunately, we are very sorry to say that the material provided was not recyclable.

“We are investigating how this miscommunication took place and managing how our new recycling processing contractor will segregate and treat the tags.

“We apologise to residents for this oversight and reiterate our commitment to using recyclable tags in the future.”

A spokesperson for FCC Environment said:

“Working with our council client, we have put enormous resource into keeping residents informed.

“When designing and planning for the final Garden Waste collection service, there were several options on the material for the tags.

“To ensure the hanger was robust enough to withstand the autumn weather, it was decided to use the same material as we that used for the Christmas tag, unfortunately the recyclable message on the design was overlooked as it should have been removed.

“All further bin hangers will be wholly recyclable.”
