NHS Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Clinical Commissioning Group (BLMK CCG) welcomed another volunteer to the Redgrave Children and Young People’s Centre in Luton today (16 June 2021).

Since the start of the vaccination programme, hundreds of people have supported the fight against coronavirus in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes by volunteering.

The latest recruit is Bedfordshire’s newly elected police and crime commissioner, Festus Akinbusoye.

Following a brief training session, Festus was set to work managing patient flow. A range of roles have been created as part of the pandemic from healthcare professionals to site support staff and administrators.

Festus confirmed that this is not the first time he has volunteered at a vaccination centre. He said:

“It is so important that we use and support these vaccination centres. I would encourage everyone eligible who hasn’t yet had their vaccine to come forward, and if you had your first one over eight weeks ago, come back and get your second.

“My role is protecting the public, and the NHS is doing a brilliant job protecting all of us in the biggest vaccine roll out in history. As well as all the vaccinators, the army of volunteers are amazing and do a fantastic job making sure that everything runs smoothly.”

Dr Sarah Whiteman, chair of BLMK CCG, said:

“Our local NHS staff have pulled out all the stops to vaccinate more than 500,000 people in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes so far. I want to say a huge thank you to every single volunteer, including Festus, who has supported us – and their communities – to help with the biggest vaccination drive in NHS history.”

All vaccination centres are on the BLMK website www.blmkccg.nhs.uk where you can read about the latest opportunity to get your vaccine locally through pharmacies across the region.

If you are interested in a volunteer role such as administration or site steward, and live in Bedfordshire, Luton, Milton Keynes, please contact bedsccg.covid.workforce@nhs.net and include your name, contact details and availability.

You will then be contacted and asked to fill in an expression of interest form.
