Planning application submitted for Flitwick Crematorium

A new planning application has been submitted for Central Bedfordshire’s first crematorium.

Central Bedfordshire Council withdrew the original application for the proposed crematorium off Fordfield Road in Steppingley, near Flitwick to have time to make changes following public feedback.

Changes since the last planning application include a new 40mph speed limit on Fordfield Road following safety concerns raised by residents. A proposed cycleway and footway link has also been installed.

The crematorium would remain in the same location as previously submitted back in March, on agricultural land with access from Fordfield Road.

Councillor Eugene Ghent, executive member for assets and housing delivery, said:

“This would be the first crematorium facility for people in Central Bedfordshire, and is much-needed with residents currently having to travel to a crematorium out of the area.

“We want to provide our residents with a local service at what can often be a very distressing and challenging time for families.”

Subject to approval, construction is estimated to take 12 months.

More information on the crematorium is available on the council’s website and details of the planning application reference (CB/21/04809/REG3) can be found online.
